CapCut's free plan is real, but "free" depends on which assets and export settings you use. The plan itself costs nothing; the restrictions show up when a project touches Pro material or a Pro export setting.
Everything below comes from CapCut's public pricing page and export help page, checked on October 20, 2026. Prices change by region and over time, so verify before subscribing.
What the free plan includes
CapCut's pricing page lists a $0 free plan with basic editing tools and free templates. In practice, a standard project using free assets can be exported at up to 1080p without a watermark.
That last point is the one people miss. CapCut does not add a watermark to every free export. It adds one when the project uses Pro-badged material, or on mobile when you decline the Pro prompt for a project beyond the free limits.
When the watermark appears
Per CapCut's export help page, a clean export requires Pro when the project contains any of the following:
- Pro templates or template scenes
- Pro effects, transitions, or LUTs
- Pro fonts and text styles
- Pro music tracks or sound effects
- Pro stickers and overlays
- AI tools or AI-generated clips
One Pro asset is enough to trigger the watermark for the whole video. Resolution does not help: CapCut says watermark removal for videos using Pro material always requires Pro.
Some templates also include a CapCut-branded ending clip. That is an outro, not a watermark. Delete the clip at the end of the timeline and re-export. Our watermark removal guide walks through the full check.
What is locked behind Pro
The pricing page and help center point to these gates:
- 4K and 60fps desktop exports. Both are Pro-only. Free desktop exports stop at 1080p.
- Mobile length. The free mobile limit is around 15 minutes and varies by region, according to the export help page.
- Pro assets. Templates, effects, fonts, music, stickers, AI tools, and premium transitions require a subscription for a clean export.
- Cloud and AI extras. Pro includes 1 TB of storage and 1,200 monthly AI credits on the US pricing page.
What Pro costs
On the US pricing page checked October 20, 2026:
- Pro: $19.99 per month, or $179.99 per year
- Ultra: $79 per month, or $900 per year, with a larger AI credit allowance
- Teams: per-seat pricing, starting around $12.49 per seat per month for two seats
The displayed price can change with promotions and region. CapCut's page itself notes that displayed pricing is for reference and the final price appears after sign-in.
Who is fine on the free plan
You can stay on CapCut free if:
- your videos are short, vertical, and edited with free templates and effects
- 1080p is enough for the platform you publish to
- you do not rely on Pro music, fonts, or AI features
- you check for Pro badges before export
For a weekly TikTok or Reels workflow built from free assets, the free plan is genuinely usable.
Who should switch
Switch if any of these describes you:
- You need 4K or 60fps. DaVinci Resolve's free version supports up to 4K at 60fps and does not watermark exports, though it has a much steeper learning curve.
- You need a guaranteed clean 1080p export from a browser. Clipchamp's free tier includes 1080p exports with no watermark.
- You want open source and local control. OpenCut is MIT-licensed and free, but it is still early beta.
- You keep using Pro templates and do not want to subscribe. Rebuilding the same edit in Canva or Clipchamp is usually faster than removing every Pro asset one by one.
Our free alternatives and no-watermark pages compare the practical options.
How to check your own export
Before uploading, verify four things:
- No Pro badge remains in the timeline.
- Any template ending clip is deleted.
- Export resolution is 1080p or lower.
- The file is clean at the start, middle, and end.
If a logo survives those checks, isolate it by exporting a short section of the project. A Pro asset somewhere in the timeline can watermark an export even when the visible frame looks free.
